First of all the photo program i will be explaining the tutorial for is called GIMP, its a free program and i would highly recommend it for those of you like me who have yet to get Photoshop :)
..........................................................................................................................................................................First i created an new image at 100 Pixels by 100 Pixels, and 300 x 300 pixels/in in the advanced tab

I then zoomed into the new image with the zoom tool to make things a little clearer, i then selected the rectangle tool and created a square following the ruler guidelines around the side and stopped at the 50 marks on both the top and side, so it created a square on the top left corner

After the square in the top left was created i needed to fill it with a color so over to the paint bucket tool i went and then i selected a color by clicking on the first of the two colored squares at the bottom of the tool panel, i selected dark grey as i want to be able to change the colours of the papers later on (this will be explained a little further down)

After the square in the top left was created i needed to fill it with a color so over to the paint bucket tool i went and then i selected a color by clicking on the first of the two colored squares at the bottom of the tool panel, i selected dark grey as i want to be able to change the colours of the papers later on (this will be explained a little further down)
I then filled the square with the dark grey

Next i created another square on the right using the retangle select tool, i then picked a lighter shade of grey and filled this sqaure with the paint bucket tool, i then created another square on the bottom left and used the paint bucket tool to fill this with the same colour

Next i went to the tool bar menu at the top and went to select, then select all, this then selects the whole image for me, i then right clicked on my mouse , i selected edit and then copy

I then created a new A4 page image (File - New), i selected A4 (300ppi) from the preset templates

Next i went to the paintbucket tool then selected the pattern fill option, i then clicked on the square below this where a new box will pop up ,i then selected the clipboard option which should be the first one at the top

I then filled the A4 page with this

Now i want to change the colour, so i go the the top manu bar and select colour, and then colourize

I then moved the slider at the top untill i had a colour i liked ( you can also move the other two sliders to to create stronger, softer, lighter and darker colours)

Now i have my paper i wanted to save it so i went up to file and then save as, then i named my paper and selected the file type i wanted, i scrolled down the list until i found JPEG, and then i clicked save

There will be a box that pops up, i moved the slider at the top all the way to the right as i want the paper to be good quality, then i clicked save (sometimes another box pops up just click the export button and your paper will save)

And thats it, thats how i created my Gingham paper, i hope this tutorial was easy to follow and i hope it was of some use to you, let me know if there are parts you dont quite understand and i will try explaining them a bit better, if this tutorial is a little over your head be sure to stop by a couple of days as i will be offering the gingham papers i have made for free off my blog :)

Fantastic tutorial Martine. I see you've got Gimp - I have it, but am struggling to master it - you've given me the incentive to have another go. Thanks for this.
